FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason softball (24-20, 9-9 A-10) secured a 6–4 victory over Hampton (10-30, 4-17 CAA) at the GMU Softball Complex on Tuesday, April 21. The Patriots capitalized on a key three-run sixth inning to clinch the win, despite being out-hit 12-7 by Hampton.
In the first inning,
Logan Pickford walked and
Tess Altevers Harris also walked, advancing Pickford to second.
Alyssa Hopkins reached on a fielder's choice, and
Elyssa DeRosa singled to left field, allowing Altevers Harris to score.
Kaleigh Friend's single through the right side brought in
Alyssa Hopkins. Impressively,
Kaleigh Friend has recorded at least two hits in consecutive games. The Green & Gold led 2-0 after the first inning.
The third inning saw
Logan Pickford singling down the left field line and later stealing second.
Tess Altevers Harris tripled to right field, driving in Pickford, extending the lead to 3-0. Altevers Harris' triple marks the 10th of her career.
In the fourth inning, Hampton's Carmynn Bonner singled and later scored on a ground into double play, making it 3-1.
In the sixth inning, Hampton added another run when Carmrynn Bonner doubled and scored on Violet Salazar's double. However, the Patriots responded with three runs.
Alyssa Hopkins singled and was replaced by pinch runner
Jessica Chan.
Elyssa DeRosa reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on
Kamryn Inman's bases-loaded walk.
Payton Auerbach then singled, driving in two more runs. The score was 6-2 at the end of the sixth.
In the seventh inning, Hampton scored two unearned runs on Carmynn Bonner's single, but George Mason held on for the win with a final score of 6-4.
Harlowe Nigh pitched a season-high 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out a career-high four batters. She threw 69 pitches, did not issue any walks and, improves her record to 3-3.
Abbey Lane relieved Nigh and pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, with one strikeout, and earned her second save of the season.
Tess Altevers Harris recorded a triple, drew a walk, and contributed one RBI, showcasing her impact at the plate.
Payton Auerbach drove in two runs, solidifying her presence in the lineup.
George Mason's next game will take place on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. against Howard at the George Mason Softball Complex.
