Washington D.C. - The George Mason men's soccer team didn't have to settle for second place this time around. After finishing as runners-up in the D.C. College Cup the past two seasons, Mason took the tournament title this year, beating American 1-0 at American. Mason made a first-half goal hold up as the Patriots improved to 2-0-0 on the season. The Eagles fell to 1-1-0.

Parker Walton was named Tournament MVP while Fro Adu, Eber Martinez and Eric Zuehsow were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mason's first scoring opportunity came in the 10th minute off a corner kick as the Patriots had a pair of touches in the box before being called for offsides. The second scoring chance came five minutes later when Taylor Morgan got a good look in front but Matt Makowski made the save. No save was made in the 23rd minute, as the Patriots were able to score the game's one goal. Brent Brockman served a ball from the right side into the box and Walton got his head on the ball and put it in the right corner to put the Patriots ahead, 1-0.

American had a slew of chances late in the first half. The first came in the 38th minute on a direct kick by Jamie Davin, but his shot on goal was snagged out of the air by Sean Cote, making his first collegiate start in net. The second came in the 42nd minute but a header off a corner kick was stopped, In the 44th and 45th minute, American had a half dozen looks at the net, but the Mason defense stepped up on each, especially, Zuehsow who headed the ball away as it was on the verge of going into the net. That allowed the Patriots to take a 1-0 lead into the half.

Early in the second half, Taylor Morgan had a 1v1 with the goalkeeper but Makowski was up to the challenge. After that, things got a bit physical as three yellow cards were award, two to American and one to Mason. Morgan had another 1v1 chance in the 76th minute and again Makowski stopped the shot and collected the rebound. American had a direct kick in the 87th minute from a few yards outside the box but the Eagles couldn't put a shot on goal.

The Patriots will return to action on Friday when they play at Penn at 8 p.m. in the Penn Soccer Classic. That tournament also includes a Sunday afternoon match at Villanova.
