FAIRFAX, Va. - No. 19 George Mason claimed second place on the final day of the D.C. College Cup Men's Soccer Tournament, hosted by the Patriots at George Mason Stadium. Mason won its opening match of the tournament against Howard on Wednesday but fell in the finale against American on Saturday evening by a final score of 2-1.

D.C. College Cup Most Valuable Player Daniel Shannon scored once in the first half and added another goal late in the second half to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead heading into the final seven minutes of the match. The Patriots got on the board with a goal by sophomore forward Draymond Washington in the 87th minute to cut the lead to a single goal. Mason had a few chances in the final minutes of the match, putting consistent pressure on American goalkeeper Matt Makowski, but the Patriots were unable to find the back of the net to tie the score.

With the win, American claimed the tournament title. George Mason and George Washington wrapped up the D.C. College Cup with an identical 1-1 record but Mason claimed second place based on the number of goals scored in the tournament. The Patriots scored three goals while GW scored twice. Howard finished in fourth place with an 0-2 record.

Following the conclusion of the second match of the evening, the Eagles were presented with the tournament trophy and the D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team was named. The team is comprised of the following players:

George Mason travels to Columbia, S.C. next weekend to participate in the adidas Gamecock Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina. The Patriots open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 with a 5 p.m. contest against Presbyterian College.
