FAIRFAX, Va. - Concluding its home slate for the 2011 season, the George Mason lacrosse team stood knotted at 4-4 at halftime against visiting Towson, but a strong second half from the Tigers sealed the win Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Caitlin Formato led the Patriots with three points.

Led by two goals and an assist from Formato in the opening half, the Patriots (3-12, 0-5 CAA) and Tigers (8-6, 4-1 CAA) stood tied at intermission, but Towson outscored Mason 7-3 in the final 20 minutes to seal the Colonial Athletic Association win. Mason was led in scoring by Formato, Chelsea Gamble and Emily Ellisen each with two goals apiece, while Anna Kopecka added a goal. In addition to Formato, Allie Hilderbrandt and Madalyn Jamison assisted on goals.

Brittany Pastrana played the full game in cage recording 12 saves. Kiersten Jauschnegg led Mason with two caused turnovers and was one of three Patriots with three ground balls; Hilderbrandt and Ellisen added three apiece.

Pacing Towson in scoring was Jackie LaMonica with three goals and two assists, while Sarah Appelt added two goals. Another six Tigers added one goal each. Alexa Demski had two caused turnovers and MaryEllen Elie had three ground balls.

Towson opened scoring in the game on an unassisted goal by Ashley Waldron at the 24:51 mark, but Gamble quickly evened the score at 1-all scoring off an assist from Jamison. LaMonica scored her first of three goals seven and a half minutes later before the Patriots responded with goals from Ellisen and Formato to take a 3-2 lead with 7:23 to play in the first half. Towson evened the score for the third time in the contest on a converted free position attempt from Appelt before the teams traded the final two goals of the half for a 4-4 halftime score.

Towson took control of the game opening the second half with a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 advantage with 13:22 remaining in regulation. Mason cut the score to 10-7 answering with three consecutive goals, but that would be the closest the Patriots would come the remainder of the game as Towson scored the final tally of the contest at 4:18 to account for the final score.

Mason concludes the 2011 schedule on the road beginning at Hofstra on Friday, April 22 for a 7 p.m. opening draw. The Patriots' final contest of the season will take place at Drexel on April 24 at 1 p.m.
