FAIRFAX, Va. -
A
late rally by the George Mason lacrosse team was not enough to overcome the
visiting Delaware Blue Hens Friday night as the Patriots fell 12-11 in double
overtime at George Mason Stadium. Three different Patriots scored three goals
apiece for Mason in the Colonial Athletic Association game.
Trailing by three goals with 12 minutes to play, the

to knot the game at 11-11 by the end of regulation. The conference foes played
through a scoreless first overtime period before Julianna Jeffers scored on the
first possession in sudden victory to seal the win for Delaware (7-7, 2-2 CAA).
Emily Ellisen
, Caitlin Formato
and Allie Hilderbrandt
paced
the Patriots netting three goals apiece while Kara Bowman
and Anna Kopecka
rounded out the scoring each with a goal. Ellisen and Madalyn Jamison
were each
credited with an assist. Senior Chelsea Gamble
won four draw controls followed
by Kopecka with three. Kopecka was also credited with a caused turnover as was
Ellisen. Brittany Pastrana
played the full game in cage and recorded five
saves.
Jeffers led the Blue Hens on the evening with three goals,
while Quinn Daly added two in addition to Kalyn McDonough. Four additional Blue
Hens added single goals for Delaware.
Delaware and Mason opened the contest trading the first six
goals over the opening six and a half minutes to leave the score in a 3-3
deadlock. Ellisen scored her first goal of the game at the 22:49 mark to break
the tie before Formato scored off an assist from Jamison at 20:48 to give the
Patriots a 5-3 lead. The Blue Hens answered with a 6-2 run over the final 20
minutes to gain a 9-7 advantage entering intermission.
Ellisen jumpstarted a strong second half from Mason that
witnessed the Patriots outscore Delaware 4-2, as the junior scored less than four
minutes into the period, cutting the score to 9-8. Two Blue Hen goals followed
before Mason spurred its furious comeback, again jumpstarted by Ellisen with an
unassisted shot at 6:29. Kopecka followed with a goal at 4:01 before
Hilderbrandt knotted the score at 11-11 with 2:59 to play in regulation. Both
teams got one shot off in the final minutes with Blue Hen goalkeeper Makenzie
Worthington picking up her second and final save and Delaware's final attempt
with nine seconds going wide.
Mason took the only shot in the first overtime period on a
Formato attempt that went wide sending the teams into a sudden victory
situation. Delaware won the draw control to start the second overtime period
and scored 12 seconds later on an unassisted shot from Jeffers to seal the
conference win.
