Cam Long, a senior men’s basketball player, and Brittany Poindexter, a senior women’s basketball player, each led their respective teams on significant winning streaks in December and for their accomplishments, they were named George Mason Male and Female Athletes of the Month for December.

Long, a native of Palm Bay, Fla and a graduate of Freedom (Woodbridge, Va.) High School, averaged a team-high 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and also scored the 1,000th point of his career as the Patriots went 5-1 in the month. The Patriots entered the month on a two-game winning streak and they won their first five games in the month to improve to 9-2 on the season, before falling to Dayton in the final game of the calendar year. Long scored 14 or more points in five of the six games in December.

Poindexter, a native of Kensington, Md. and a graduate of Academy of the Holy Cross, averaged a team-high 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 56 percent from the field. After opening the month with a pair of losses, the Patriots won four straight games to close out the calendar year. Mason’s four-straight wins were all by more-than 15 points. Mason added to that streak by winning their CAA opener in early January.

Poindexter previously won the award in November of 2008 while Long has won the award for the third-straight season, having taken it home in January of 2009 and January of 2010.
