|Women's Basketball Falls at Delaware, 62-27|
NEWARK, Del. - The George Mason women's basketball team dropped a 62-27 decision at Delaware Thursday night in the Bob Carpenter Center. Only one player reached double-figure scoring numbers between both teams as Mason dipped to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. In its conference opener, Delaware improved to 10-3, 1-0.
Elena Delle Donne was the lone player to reach double-figures, scoring a game-high 19 points as Talisha Watts and Joyous Tharrington each scored a team-high six points for Mason. The Patriots were outrebounded on the glass, 47-27, and shot 16.7 percent from the field compared to Delaware's 42.3 percent effort.
Mason was limited to five field goals through the first half as Delaware ran away with a 35-12 lead at the halftime break. Amber Easter made it a one-point ballgame, 4-3, in the early going hitting a triple at the 15:48 mark, but the Blue Hens used a 13-0 run to take a 17-3 lead by 9:46. Delaware continued to expand its lead, grabbing a 21-point advantage, 31-10, off a pair of free throws from Trumae Lucas at 1:51 as Courtni Green hit a three-pointer to close the half for a 35-12 Delaware halftime advantage.
It was all Delaware in the second half as the Blue Hens quickly pulled away with a 30-point lead off a Jaquetta May trip to the charity stripe at 13:52. May hit a jumper to follow as Mason used an 8-2 run to cut the score to 49-23 at 10:23, the closest the Patriots would come the remainder of the game. Delaware's largest lead of the contest was the final score of 62-27.
For the game, Mason shot 42.9 percent from three-point range (3-7) and went 8-of-13 from the free throw line. Delaware went 4-for-15 from long range and connected on 14-of-17 attempts at the charity stripe.
This marked Mason's lowest offensive total since competing in the CAA beginning in 1985.George Mason returns home on Sunday, January 13 to host conference foe Hofstra at the Patriot Center. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
