FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men’s soccer defeated Campbell University 3-1 in its second of two preseason exhibition matches in Buies Creek, NC on Saturday evening.
The Patriots put in all three of their goals in the first half and struck first less than 10 minutes into the match. After a ball was played into the center of the box freshman Henning Dirks was able to bury it for the first goal, coming in the eighth minute with assists from Jannik Eckenrode and Zach Herstek.
Campbell tied up the game with a free kick from five yards out in the 14th minute but Mason would retake the lead in the 28th minute of play when Timi Mulgrew was able to find space and score from the top of the circle. Conlan Kemmerer put in the third and final goal for Mason with three minutes remaining in the first half off a pass from Matt Tucker, finding the corner of the net.
The Patriots outshot the Camels 17-8 on the evening while Steffen Kraus and Michael Butts each made one save. Mason begins the regular season at American University on August 29 with a match against Howard in the Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup.
