FAIRFAX, Virginia – The George Mason Softball Team lost to Army and Cornell in the 2nd day of the Patriot Classic held at the George Mason Softball Complex.
The Patriots faced off against Army again in the first game of their day two doubleheader. The game featured a great pitching duel between Mason’s Casey Herring and Army’s Caroline Smith.
Herring pitched an incredible six innings, giving up only three hits and one earned run. Three Patriots were able to record a multi-hit game, with Tiffany Webb, Cori Prince, and Brooke Blankenship all going 2 for 4. In the end, it wasn’t enough to top the Black Knights as Smith pitched a shutout.
Army won the game 1-0 and improved their record to 5-8 while the Patriots fell to 0-5.
Brooke Blankenship had a hot bat again in the second game, against Cornell. She went 1 for 3 in the game, recording a triple and two RBI. Katherine Marsh was the only other Patriot to record a hit in the game.
Stephanie Maher was the starting pitcher for the Patriots. After a tough first inning, Maher settled down, allowing only two hits in her final four innings pitched. Opposite of her, for the Big Red, was sophomore Meg Parker. Parker pitched five innings giving up only two hits and two earned runs.
The game was called in the top of the 6th inning due to rain. Cornell received a 4-3 win because they led after the 5th inning (the final completed inning of the game). With the win, the Big Red improved their record to 2-2, while Mason dropped to 0-6.
