The 12th seeded Patriots (7-22, 1-15 A-10) will take on 13th seeded Massachusetts (4-26, 1-15 A-10) Wednesday night in the opening game of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.
The Patriots’ 101-73 win over UMass on Feb. 12 was the tiebreaker giving Mason the higher seed in the meeting. The winner of Wednesday’s match up will take on fifth seed and defending A-10 tournament champions, Saint Joseph’s, Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
The University of Dayton Flyers (21-6, 14-2 A-10) captured the top-seed receiving one of the four byes into quarterfinal play of the Championship. Joining Dayton with the remaining three byes are St. Bonaventure (22-9, 11-5 A-10), Fordham (22-7, 11-5 A-10) and George Washington (20-9, 11-5 A-10) which all finished the season with 11-5 records in A-10 play. SBU earned the second seed in the Championship thanks to its head-to-head wins over both the Rams and Colonials. Fordham was awarded the third seed due to its victory over GW in the regular season.
