Rachel Obregon netted five goals including the game winner as she fueled the Patriots to a 13-12 triple overtime victory over Longwood on Sunday afternoon in the freezing rain.
The senior found the back of the net for the 10th time this season just 58 second into the third overtime to end the game and secure Mason’s first win of 2014.
Mason started things off early taking a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes of play starting with a goal from Katie Mascolo, assisted by Obregon. The Patriots would go up 4-1 with 22:05 left in the first half, but Longwood rattled off five unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to take a 6-4 lead. The Patriots would head into the break trailing 7-6 thanks to goals from Obregon and Gina Purdue.
With the game knotted up at 9-9 with 14:25 to play, Longwood would rally to take a commanding 12-9 lead with three unanswered goals. However, the Green and Gold did not back down, netting three of their own to force overtime.
Just under seven minutes of overtime had been played before Obregon found the back to end the game. In addition to Obregon’s five goals on the day, Mascolo scored three times while Purdue, Kirstin Russell, Caitlin McGinn, Megan Bisson and Brooke Lorber each contributed a goal to the victory.
