FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women’s volleyball team dropped a closely-contested three-set match on Saturday evening to the University of Dayton, falling 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the RAC.
Mason dropped to 6-19 and 2-9 in conference play while the Flyers improved to 11-12, 5-6 in the A-10.
Redshirt sophomore Lolade Owokoniran led the Patriots with 10 kills on .533 hitting, while classmate Bernetta Moore had a match-high 16 digs. Megan Campbell and Isolde Hannan paced UD with 10 kills apiece.
Setting the tone for the entire evening early, the first set featured eight tie scores and four lead changes. After a 4-1 Dayton lead out of the opening whistle, the margin stayed within three points until a 6-2 Flyer run gave them the lead, 19-16. Mason battled back to tie the score on an Owokoniran kill and UD error at 23-23, but a pair of Patriot errors gave the Flyers the set.
Dayton hit .345 in the second set as they broke open a 9-9 deadlock with a 7-2 run, taking a 16-11 lead. Mason cut the deficit to one with four straight points, but the Patriots couldn’t overcome the Flyers. It was a two-point game at 22-20, but a pair of UD blocks and a Jenna Jendryk kill put UD up two sets at intermission.
Mason led 3-1 early in the third but gave up their lead at 6-6. After sideouts by each squad, the Flyers took the lead for good, although it remained a fairly close contest until the end. UD led by as much as 23-17 before Mason cut it to three at 23-20 and 24-21, but a Patriot error closed out the match.
The Patriots are back in action in their final home match of the season next Saturday, hosting Fordham at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, seniors Tori Price, Laura Spencer and Lana Zonjic will be recognized as part of Senior Night.
