The Women's tennis team travelled to Loyola on Wednesday to play their last match of the season. The Patriots and the Greyhounds battled for almost four and a half hours before Mason fell 3-4.

The match began with Loyola taking the doubles point by a 2-1 margin. Senior captain Kiersten Pappas, playing in her last collegiate match, and Maya Hicks were the only doubles team to win. They starting slow and went down 2-5 before rallying to take the match in a tie-breaker 12-10.

“I am very happy to see Kiersten end her career with a victory”, commented Coach Stephen Curtis. “She has been a tremendous asset to this team in her four years. She has maintained an incredible attitude even though she has gone through two shoulder surgeries during her career here at Mason.”

Mason fell behind 0-2 as Maya Hicks fell to the # 1,All Metro Conference player, Megan Hahn. Brittany Pilkington put Mason on the board with solid win at #2 over Haleigh Morgus. The Patiots fell behind 1-3 when Andy Londen dropped her match to Tiffany Ash in the 6 position before # 4 Esu Erdenebat closed the score to 2-3 with her 6-3, 6-3 win at #4 against Scarlett Hoy. Mason needed the last two matches, Ashley Delaney at #3 and Kate Desiatnikova at #5, to secure the victory. Both matches went to the third set. Delaney won her match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Emily Hughes to tie the score at 3-3. Desiatnikova fought of at match point at 5-6 in the third set to force the deciding tie-breaker but fell just short of the victory losing 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (4) to Olivia Ott.

“This was a tough match today. Loyola has had a great season, but I am proud of my young team,” added Coach Curtis. “It has been a tough season with the poor weather we have had and the fact that we couldn’t play in the CAA Championships made it more of a motivational struggle but we are excited about the opportunity to compete in the A10 next season.”

Mason finishes the season 7-14 before heading to the A10 next year. Loyola heads to the Metro Athletic Association championships tomorrow after a 14-6 regular season record.
