Two members of the George Mason men’s track & field team were recognized for their outstanding performances over the weekend, as David Verburg and Wes Sun took home Colonial Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors for track and field, respectively, on Tuesday. The selections mark the ninth and 10th weekly awards from the conference for Mason this season.
Verburg, who shared the honor with William & Mary’s Alex McGrath, picked up his third CAA weekly honor this season after a pair of first-place finishes at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at Baylor on Saturday. In the afternoon session of the 200-meter dash, Verburg crossed the line in 21.19, while winning the 400-meter evening race in 45.56. Both were IC4A qualifying times, with the latter a season-best for him. He also ran the third leg of the 4x400-meter relay, which finished third with a time of 3:12.37.
Sun, meanwhile, punched his ticket to the IC4A Championships in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.92 meters. He not only won the event at the Morgan State Legacy Meet, but also registered a season-best. It is the senior’s third IC4A qualification in the pole vault, as he was recognized by the conference for the first time in his career.
On the women’s side, a pair of Tribe athletes was also recognized as William & Mary’s Emily Stites and Nicole Dory earned the women’s track and field weekly awards, respectively.
The Patriots will be back in action later this week in the City of Brotherly Love, taking part in the historic Penn Relays from Thursday to Saturday.
