The George Mason men’s basketball team opens play in the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Championship presented by Jani-King, facing No. 5-seed Drexel in the tournament’s opening game. The Dragons and Patriots split the season series, with each team winning on the road.

Drexel finished the regular season at 13-17 and .500 in conference play, including  a 62-46 win over UNCW last Saturday, marking the Dragons’ second-straight win. DU is led by Damion Lee, one of three double-digit scorers, who is third in the CAA at 17.4 points per game.

The Patriots are 30-23 in the CAA Tournament over the course of its 27-year history, including a mark of 23-20 at the Richmond Coliseum. Mason has won at least one game in six out of the last seven tourneys, with the lone exception coming in 2010, a 75-60 loss to #5 VCU in the quarterfinals. Saturday’s game marks the first meeting in the CAA Championship between George Mason and Drexel.

George Mason has made a habit of wearing white uniforms in their first game at the CAA Championship in recent years. The Patriots have been among the top-four seeds for each of the last six tournaments including 2013. The last time Mason did not was 2007, when the sixth-seeded Patriots advanced all the way to the championship game.

The Patriots lead the all-time series against Drexel, 13-8. A win by the Patriots will advance them to the semifinals, where they will face top-seed Northeastern at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
