The George Mason men’s basketball team hosts Northern Iowa Saturday evening in the Patriots’ final contest before breaking for final exams. This is the second meeting between the two teams, after the Patriots defeated the Panthers, 77-71, in Cedar Falls two seasons ago.
UNI makes the trip to Fairfax with a 5-3 record in tow, including a 76-59 home win over Northern Colorado on Wednedsday night. The Panthers are playing their first true road contest of the season, following a 5-0 start at home and three losses at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. Deon Mitchell paces the UNI offense, averaging 13.4 points per game while also dishing a team-high 27 assists.
Coming into Saturday’s game against the Panthers, the Patriots have been victorious in their last 14 games at home. That streak ranks tied with Montana for ninth in the nation, one game behind Ohio University. The Patriots have won 32 of their last 33 games at home dating back to the 2010-11 season, with the lone loss coming against Duquesne last December.
The Patriots are 5-7 all-time against members of the Missouri Valley Conference. Mason has three wins over Wichita State (including the 2006 Sweet 16 win) and wins over Creighton and UNI.
