About the Team
The George Mason University Cheerleading program includes a nationally ranked Small Co-ed (Green) competitive team and an All-Girl (Gold) sideline team. Currently, the program is under the direction of Head Coaches Kelly Beyer and Ryan Smith; as well as Assistant Coaches Jessica Boger, Leah Gearheart and Dallas Hensley.
The Mason Cheerleaders cheer at all home Men's and Women's Basketball games, as well as the A10 Basketball tournaments. They are also featured at many community appearances, on-campus pep rallies and University events like Mason Madness. Several Mason Cheerleader alumni have gone on to cheer professionally. We have had former Mason Cheerleaders on the NFL Redskinette cheer team and Ambassador team and on the Ravens Cheer Team and Ambassador team. Many other alumni coach area high school and all-star cheer teams.
Mason Cheer Collegiate Stunt Clinics
Throughout the year, the Mason Cheerleaders fundraise by holding stunt clinics. Any and all current, former or aspiring cheerleaders (All-Star, High School and College) are welcome to attend! Learn better technique by group stunting and/or partner stunting with the George Mason University Cheerleaders. Keep checking the website for further information on upcoming clinics and for the registration form. Our clinic dates for this fall are September 18th, October 23rd, and November 13th.
The Green team competes annually at UCA's National College Cheerleading Championship, held every January at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. They have placed in the top 10 of the Nation's best college cheer teams for the past ten years. This year, they are currently ranked 6th in Division I Small Coed.
As part of the UCA National College Partner Stunt Championship, a Mason Cheer All-Girl 4 group placed 5th in 2010.
We recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of our Large Coed team that took home 1st place in the National Championship in 1990. Let's Go Mason!
Mason Cheer Information
Throughout the school year, Gold team practices are held 2 evenings a week with 2-3 extra practices in October leading up to Mason Madness.
During the fall semester, Green team practices are held 4 evenings a week, and increase to 6 practices a week with about 7 extra performances during the competition season (December - January). Green team practices change to 2 evenings a week for the spring semester.
Game schedules will be distributed in the beginning of the basketball season. Mason Cheerleaders are required to cheer games over Thanksgiving break, winter break and spring break if scheduled.
All current students are eligible to tryout, as well as incoming freshman that have already applied to George Mason University. Tryouts for the 2016-2017 season have concluded.
All incoming Freshmen, transfers and current Mason students that make the team and plan to live on campus must check the “will need housing over the winter break” option on their housing application.
For more information or if you have additional questions, please contact coach Jessica Boger at email@example.com.
Tryouts for the 2016-2017 George Mason University Cheerleading Program have been concluded. Tryouts for the program are normally held in late April or early May. More information about next season’s tryouts can be found below
All of the tryout paper work/required forms need to be RECEIVED in our office no later than the due date. Note that the University mail system can sometimes delay delivery so you may want to consider hand delivery or a mail service with firm delivery schedule (UPS, FedEx).
All new cheerleaders will be required to submit a front and back copy of their medical insurance information and policy number, as well as a copy of their current physical exam (DATED SEPTEMBER 2016 OR LATER). Any general physical form from your high school or doctor’s office is sufficient (immunization records alone are NOT sufficient for this portion of your application package). A basic physical form will be posted along with the rest of the required paper work in early 2017. Make sure paper work is RECEIVED in our mailbox no later than the due date.
If you do not have a current physical, you will not be permitted to try out for the team!
Cheerleaders should come to the tryout prepared to be active in Mason green or gold color clothing with no other team or school's affiliation on them. Shirts should be tucked into cheer shorts with no spandex showing and ladies should wear a white bow with their hair half up and half down. Make-up for the tryout should be neat, simple and collegiate (no glitter). Gentlemen should be clean shaven. NO JEWELRY.
Tryout videos are accepted, but need to be RECEIVED before the tryout date. More information about video tryouts will be posted closer to tryout date in 2017.
