Seven different Patriots scored Friday as Mason fell 12-7 to Saint Joseph’s on a rainy night at George Mason Stadium.
Mason started things off with a goal from Gina Purdue less than 90 seconds into play, starting a goal-for-goal situation resulting in a 3-3 tie with 14:51 remaining in the first half. A little over two minutes later, the game was delayed due to lightning in the vicinity.
The Patriots were once again the first to score when play resumed with a goal from Alexa McGovern with 6:05 in the opening half, but from there is was all Saint Joe’s. The Hawks would get two goals in the last 1:37 of the first half to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
SJU opened the second half with two more unanswered goals before Katie Mascolo would find the back of the net, ending the Hawks 4-0 run. Jacquelyn Spalding followed with a goal off a free position shot a little over two minutes later to cut the deficit to 7-6.
The Hawks once again responded with five unanswered goals, taking a 12-6 lead with 3:32 remaining. Mason didn’t let SJU have the last word, though as Caitlin McGinn broke through the Hawk’s defense for a goal with less than a minute to play.
Bonnie McShane led the Hawks with four goals. While the Patriots also saw goals from Rachel Obregon and Kirsten Russell. Caroline Brouse had eight saves in goal.
The Patriots wrap up the season Sunday when they host La Salle. Please join Mason prior to the game when they honor seniors Mascolo, Obregon, Sam Scruggs and Ashley Wheeler.
