CHARLESTON, S.C. - The George Mason softball team opened the 2013 campaign edging Charleston Southern 2-1 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Charleston Southern Tournament. Casey Herring threw a two-hitter and recorded 10 strikeouts logging a complete game for the Patriots. Mason advanced to 1-0 with the win and, with the loss, Charleston Southern falls to 0-1.

Mason scored both of its runs in the fifth inning off an RBI single from Megan Blank that drove in Tiffany Webb and Julia Czarnecki. Charleston Southern tried to rally back in the bottom half of the inning putting two on base on a Melanie Stickney single to the left side and Linzy Rother hit by a pitch. The Huskies were unable to capitalize though and Stickney and Rother were left on base.

The Patriots threatened to score again in the sixth with the bases loaded after Brooke Blankenship and Angela Maioran walked and Sarah Solano singled to the mound. CSU erased the threat as Mason left three on base.

The seventh inning brought the Patriots the same chance to advance their led with the bases loaded after two hit by pitches and a walk. Once again, Charleston Southern held off the visiting squad as Mason's two runs in the fifth and strong defense in the seventh would be enough to secure the win.

The Patriots return to action tomorrow with a 10:00 a.m. match-up with UNC Greensboro, followed by another game with Charleston Southern at noon.
